The fifties era was an extremely interesting era for British psychic mediums.

Having just come through world war two where Winston Churchill decide that medium Helen Duncan was a danger to the war effort because of her ability to being through the spirits of soldiers who had passed on and might well be able to pass on military secrets and tried under the Britain's ancient Witchcraft Act.

This act was later replaced with the current Fraudulent Mediums Act that stands today. Helen Hughes had a great deal to do with the repealing of this old act as she campaigned round the country while displaying her medium-ship abilities. During the fifties several really great mediums came to the fore in Britain. Arthur Findlay was a researcher many of these psychics. One of these psychics medium was John Sloan. This Scot was an extremely humble man who had a remarkable gift. He produced ectoplasm though which the voices of the spirits passed on would talk direct to their loved ones. One thing that puts him in a class of his own is that he never ever charged for his services. Another of the great mediums of this era was Ivy Northage who was a psychic teacher of this medium and founded the Ivy Northage School for Mediums. Here her students received an excellent grounding in the psychic medium-ship ability and later went on to do public platform appearances.

A medium that was truly remarkable in this era was the psychic Rosemary Brown. This lady would receive visits from famous composers of music and although she had very mediocre talents in the department of the piano she would notate the music they had composed after passing into spirit. Many famous pianists were really taken with the music she wrote down at the behest of the passed spirits. These spirits included Liszt. Estelle Roberts requires no introduction to most in the world at large. She truly was renowned in her day. She was foremost in creating the spiritualist religion and getting it legally recognized in Britain. She went so far as to going to Parliament and demonstrating her clairvoyance to all there. Her skill in this regard has impacted the belief in this medium to this day. Her abilities were so exceptional that the most hardened cynics were unable to explain them away.

Last but by no means least we look at Lilian Bailey O.B.E. medium to the Queen Mum. She was consulted by many of the Royals and was the communicator for the Bertie to the Queen Mum. This was only one of the people she gave evidence to of life after death. The era of the 1950’s was a remarkable starting point for the spiritualist church in Britain. And it was as a result of these séances that the spiritualist church was finally able to come into its own and the abilities of people who are psychic were finally recognized.
